What does it mean to be competent?

Presentation summary: The presentation will start with a broad definition of competency and being competent. This will be followed by a conversation around what that means within a professional context, where a “profession” such as case management, has no defined career and education route. The discussion will be related to existing competency framework developed by the three case management organisations (CMSUK, BABICM & VRA).  We will work through how one can think about different levels of being competent, how to achieve those levels and evidence them.

Presentation aims:

  • To encourage self-reflection and to think about how to articulate a competency as well as to develop a plan if gaps are identified
  • Understand the notion of competency
  • Develop a sense of how to evidence competencies
  • Encourage reflection on own development goals
