CMSUK Webinar 'Pain: The Human Approach' delivered by Dr Dee Burrows

As part of CMSUK's quest to offer greater access to training and support for members, a series of 60 minute lunch-and-learn webinars will be hosted throughout 2016. These will be free events open to Members only (includes Pending Members).

We are pleased to announce that bookings for the first webinar entitled “Pain: The Human Approach” delivered by Dr Dee Burrows, Consultant Nurse are now open via the CMSUK website. This will be held on Friday 20th May 2016 at 12:00.

The aims of this session are as follows:

  • To understand the “threat” that people with pain feel
  • To consider what drives pain… and people with pain
  • To explore choices to help soothe the pain experience whether by medical, medication, psychological or social intervention aimed at facilitating self-management and rehabilitation
  • To suggest helpful resources on chronic pain and its management

Short Biography

Dr Dee Burrows is a member of CMSUK.  She is an Independent Consultant Nurse in Chronic Pain Management; Clinical Nurse Specialist, Chronic Pain in Torbay & South Devon and Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University.  She is Secretary of the Primary & Community Care Special Interest Group (SIG) of the British Pain Society; and a co-opted Committee member of the Pain Management Programmes and Information, Communication & Technology SIGS.  She recently co-authored the Faculty of Pain Medicine standards for nursing practice in pain.

Dee was awarded her doctorate in 2000 for her thesis on the identification and use of self-generated pain coping strategies.  She has been involved in pain research and service development, returning to full time clinical work in pain management 12 years ago.  She sees a wide variety of patients; undertakes medication reviews, TENS / ENM treatments and delivers individualised pain education programmes based upon the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and / or Compassion Focused Therapy. 

In her “down time”, Dee enjoys walking on Dartmoor, catching up with family and friends, watching Formula 1 Grand Prix racing and has a fixation on elephants after a childhood in Africa!
